Just a month ago putting the final lettering on this mural that I first painted 11 or 12 years ago. I seem to have a particular way of making a simple project last more than a decade. Haha haha, flopsweat. And so at long last, here we are. On Golden Gate street just above Sunset, at the back entrance of Micheltorena Elementary in Silverlake. Welcome in Chinese, Tongva, Philipino, Spanish, English, Korean, and French.
This gets tedious quickly, so I took many days dipping in and out for a few minutes of drawing houses. It was good, and they got easier to do and more importantly, it never got dull. I am probably going to ink it in a similar fashion, but we’ll see, dip in dip out.
A few months ago, I talked with Los Bros at the LA Times Festival of Books. My phone somehow recorded the whole thing in a 2 hour voice memo to the to the theatre’s slide projectionist – whom I’d been texting with about setting up the slides for the talk. You know how your phone is always recording voice memos to the last person you were texting? Anyhow, Katie Skelly had the idea to transcribe it, and so here it is.
I spoke for a couple hours with Austin English all about comics, drawing, writing, all the things.

Alright, here we go, I started drawing with this page, the second one. This was the easiest place to start. flop sweat and shaky squiggles, lines pointing to the middle of his face. Freakouts and flop sweat, it’s what’s happening right now.
some teeth grinding and gnashing and the beginnings of an general flip out. genuinely this was fun to draw. Could I go on for pages? Maybe? This could be a whole Shaolin Cowboy sort of thing where it’s just one big long extended storm of impotent rage. There’s volumes of this that could be drawn!
