      Iterations. One drawing of the the same thing, one after another will change dramatically. I like to do things in iterations, it helps me to see it with increasing clarity – what does it want to be?

      Give it some time, the image will slowly take shape. Starting out it’s a rough go, even if I do have some idea of the image, it just doesn’t make much sense on the page. I knew that I wanted to be crouched behind a drawing board, no chair, outside. I draw the best I can and by the end of it, I see something of what I’m after. So the do it again. The second image feels more in line. We’re on the floor, hunched over the drawing table, there’s a particular feel to it. Elements are shaping up, we’ve got glasses and the drawing table as part of it, but it’s still not there yet.

      So by the third drawing, things are shaping up an making a little more sense. The posture and the table all feel good, so let’s plunge ahead and put in the back ground. This is starting to shape up. Drawing rough layout first with a rounded hard light 5H pencil, and then “inking” it with a soft dark HB pencil.

      SO the penciling becomes the practice inking, I find where all the lines go and know the way it fits. So now it’s time to ink it. Lightbox it on to Strathmore Bristol 300 smooth. Then we do the first pass of colors. Then many more passes. Honestly, the coloring of this was on the back burner for a couple of months.

      This last dark blue green one felt like something of where I wanted to be, an in a cave and on a high mountain in the dark underwater in a a dream fugue. But still it wasn’t there. So let it sit, peering in on it occasionally. What occurs to me is that it’s not got enough birds walking around. I resist doing it, but land on it as being unavoidable. Time to draw birds.
